APBP Individual Award Nominations
Please read the awards criteria below before completing the form. On the nomination form, you will have the ability to upload a file with information and background on your nominee. Please provide information on why the nominee is deserving of the APBP award and how they specifically meet some or all of the criteria noted. In order to provide the reviewers a solid sense of your nominee, it is strongly recommended to include the nominee's resume or CV and/or at least one letter of support, etc. Your nomination should be concise, yet thorough and informative. Awardees will be announced at the 2025 APBP Virtual Summit: A Path to Progress.
Please read the award criteria carefully and make sure that your nominee meets the minimum requirements of the specific award before you submit a nomination form.
- Nomination forms may only be submitted by current APBP members in good standing (dues up to date).
- Some Awards have APBP member requirement and some do not. Please read the criteria carefully. APBP Board members are not eligible to receive an award but may nominate an APBP member for an award. Award Criteria:
Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has made a substantial commitment to the profession during their lifetime and who has shown excellence in the field of bicycle and pedestrian planning, design, advocacy, research, or education. The award distinguishes those whose vision and determination have made their communities better places to bicycle and walk and who inspire the rest of us. This award is open to both APBP members and non-members who have contributed to our profession. A person may be nominated posthumously, after retirement, or while still working in the field. If the award recipient is not a member of APBP they will be given a complimentary year of membership.
Public Sector Professional of the Year Award recognizes a current APBP member practicing in the public sector who in the past 12 months has accomplished one or more of the following:
- Initiated, advanced, and/or published innovative research
- Brought about institutional change to increase the quality and accessibility of pedestrian and/or bicycle improvements for all individuals
- Provided educational and training opportunities for new and existing professionals
- Was active or involved in other organizations to share and expand the knowledge base both on and off the job
- Promoted and encouraged equity, diversity, and inclusion in transportation decision making
- Promoted racial and social justice in communities through their work
- Advanced the perception of the profession in the eyes of the public.
Private Sector Professional-of-the-Year Award recognizes a current APBP member working in the private sector who in the past 12 months has accomplished one or more of the following:
- Published or presented innovative research
- Produced high quality plans and designs
- Provided educational and training opportunities for new and existing professionals
- Helped to expand the quality of employment opportunities in the field for a diverse range of individuals
- Promoted and encouraged equity, diversity, and inclusion in transportation decision making
- Promoted racial and social justice in communities through their work
- Volunteered their time in the field.
- Nominations by members of the same firm or agency are permitted, but not favored.
Nonprofit Sector Professional-of-the-Year Award recognizes a person working in the not-for-profit sector, including community-based organizations, who in the past 12 months has accomplished one or more of the following related to bicycle and pedestrian safety and comfort:
- Published or presented innovative research
- Undertook innovative community engagement initiatives
- Influenced policy decisions and funding
- Provided educational and training opportunities to members of the community
- Promoted and encouraged equity, diversity, and inclusion in transportation decision making
- Promoted racial and social justice in communities through their work
- Helped to expand the quality of opportunities in the field for a diverse range of individuals
Research Professional-of-the-Year Award recognizes a current APBP member who in the past 12 months has accomplished one or more of the following:
- Led or worked on research that advanced our field meaningfully
- Advanced the professional knowledge of others through research
- Led or enabled outstanding contributions in pursuit of research goals (e.g. process improvements, program creation, substantive contributions to obtaining external funding, idea creation, innovation)
- Promoted and encouraged equity, diversity, and inclusion in transportation decision making
- Promoted racial and social justice in communities through their work
Young Professional of the Year Award recognizes a current APBP member under the age of 30 whose leadership and accomplishments distinguish that person from their cohort. Please also reference the applicable bullet points from the Public Sector, Private Sector, Nonprofit Sector, or Research Professional descriptions.
APBP Chapter Award Nominations

We invite you to nominate your chapter for one of the APBP Chapter Awards! Please read the criteria below before completing the form. Your nomination should be concise, yet thorough and informative.
Chapter Awards Criteria:
APBP Chapter Awards recognize the achievements of APBP chapters that have added value to the organization by creating opportunities for local APBP members to grow, engage and connect. Through their efforts, they have raised the visibility of our organization and helped to strengthen and grow our profession and our membership. Up to two awards may be given:
- Chapter of the Year Award: to the most outstanding chapter all around
- Has examples of work completed in at least three of the areas noted below
- Chapter Momentum Award: to a chapter that has shown the most improvement
- Demonstrates improvement through increased membership and/or an increase in activities from one year to the next in two or more of the areas noted below
Chapter Awards will recognize the work that chapters have completed in the previous year, which is likely to include some of the items listed below. In the award nomination, we encourage chapters to highlight their activities and programs including name, date, location, number of attendees, and brief description. Where possible, highlight how the event benefited or addressed member recruitment; diversity, equity and inclusion; skill development; and/or leadership or advocacy opportunities:
- Communication with Members: Regular touch points with chapter members with opportunities for contributions and engagement such as in-person or virtual meetings, collecting feedback and ideas and updates about activities
- Networking/Social Events: Did your Chapter hold any networking events? Describe any events that would have led to a particularly meaningful experience for members.
- Training/Professional Development: Did your Chapter host any training events or professional development opportunities for your members? Did your Chapter engage in any activities to educate and inform members about issues, legislation, APBP policy statements and/or regulations that might impact the transportation industry?
- Field Trips/Technical Tours: Did your Chapter go on any field trips, create or contribute to demonstration/pilot projects, STEM events, clean-ups, bike to work day/Bike Everywhere Day events, community rides or walks?
- Student/Younger Member Support: Describe how your Chapter supported your APBP Students and Young or New Professional Members (i.e. student engagement, local student/academic programs, mentoring, etc.).
- Community Outreach: Did your Chapter, for example, connect with local advocacy/community organizations, Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committees or other transportation organizations to address a local transportation issue or collaborate with industry on a project or program?
